THE BALLAD OF NIK AND BOB
as told by the Mighty Thunder Rider

Episode 02

viv's house

VIV'S HOUSE

Robert and Nik were out in Soho, in London's West End, going for a meal in a Greek restaurant. At the restaurant, they noticed Viv Stanshall of the Bonzo Dog Doo Da Band at another table, who they used to hang out with at the Liberty Records offices (they were both on the label). Viv was already fairly drunk and was having a few problems communicating. Nik and Robert joined him, and, after a good meal and a few bottles of retzina, and some ouzo firewater, it transpired that Viv was on some sort of medication for his manic depression.

When it was time to leave, Viv got up and immediately staggered against several large stacks of plates on the counter, which crashed to the floor, smashing a lot of them. In spite of the Greek tradition of smashing glasses and bottles on the floor during bouts of drinking camaraderie, the proprietor was not amused, and angrily demanded payment. Robert and Nik managed to hustle Viv outside and into a taxi before the police arrived, and they took him home.

Viv's house was in East Finchley, near to the house where Robert and Nik lived with Lemmy, Del Dettmar, DikMik, and, sometimes, Dave Brock (ironically the landlady's name was Ms. Rawana, or Ma Rawana). Viv invited Robert and Nik into his house for more drinks. He took them into a room that looked like a junk shop, full of stage props, weird things, musical instruments, books, sheet music, a wind-up phonograph, and piles of rare 78 RPM acetate records. Viv proceeded to do as he had done in the restaurant, falling into things, knocking over and breaking a lot of his records. They had more drinks, and Viv showed them around his house. One room he showed them had been his little boy's bedroom. Viv's wife had left him, taking the boy with her, due to the difficulty of living with him when he carried on like this. Nik noticed that the window was broken and thought no more about it. Shortly after that, Robert and Nik went home.

Sometime later, there was a loud banging on their front door and shouted accusations from Viv that they had thrown his son out of his bedroom window, which he claimed was now broken. By this time everyone in the house was awake, as well as many of their neighbours on the street. Robert and Nik managed to calm Viv down, and were able to explain the situation to him and alleviate his confusion. Robert then accompanied Viv home and everyone was the best of friends.
